FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Volunteer Firefighter Graduations from State Academy
The Scappoose Rural Fire District and Columbia River Fire & Rescue are very
proud to announce the graduation of a combined 14 new volunteer firefighter
recruits from the first ever Oregon State Department of Public Safety Standards
and Training academy in Salem.
This academy is the pilot for, what is hoped to be, an annual academy offered to
all fire departments and districts across the State of Oregon. Columbia County
was represented by 21 students. The SRFD had 9 new recruits attend the
academy which is also the largest number of new recruits from any single
agency attending the academy. CRF&R also sent 5 new recruits for training.
The recruits spent a total of 9 weekends over 5 months in Salem learning
firefighting skills, knowledge and skills on how to deal with hazardous materials
and how to operate emergency vehicles. They completed a total of 140 hours of
training earning them the ability to enter areas of immediate danger to life and
health (IDLH) and placing them well on their way he Firefighter I certification.
There were three awards given to members of the graduating class who where
chosen by the staff and instructors at the academy. Recruits from SRFD and
CRF&R were recipients of two awards. Ron Maruska of SRFD received the
Victor G. Atiyeh Award for leadership, motivation and encouragement. Jose
Ramirez Sr. from CRF&R received the Class Skills Achievement Award. Both
fire districts are very grateful and proud of these individuals and their families for
their commitment and support while getting ready to serve their community.
Thank You!
